Dental Crowns
Dental crowns at Shine and Smilez Care are custom-designed restorations used to cover and protect damaged, weakened, or aesthetically imperfect teeth. Crowns are an effective solution to restore the function, shape, and appearance of your teeth while providing long-lasting protection.
Why You Might Need a Dental Crown:
- To protect a weakened tooth from breaking, often following a root canal or large filling.
- To restore a broken or severely worn-down tooth.
- To cover and support a tooth with a large filling when there isn’t enough tooth left.
- To improve the appearance of misshapen or discolored teeth.
- To cap a dental implant or hold a dental bridge in place.
The Procedure:
Examination and Preparation: During your initial visit, our dentist will examine the affected tooth, possibly taking X-rays to assess its condition. The tooth will be reshaped to create space for the crown, and an impression or scan of your tooth will be made to custom-design your crown.
Temporary Crown: While your permanent crown is being fabricated in a dental lab, we will place a temporary crown to protect the prepared tooth.
Fitting the Permanent Crown: Once your permanent crown is ready, you will return for a second visit. The dentist will remove the temporary crown, check the fit and color of the new crown, and make any necessary adjustments. Once satisfied with the fit, the permanent crown will be cemented securely onto your tooth.
Types of Crowns:
- Porcelain or Ceramic Crowns: Offer a natural tooth color and are ideal for front teeth.
- Metal Crowns: Known for their strength and durability, commonly used for molars.
- Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal Crowns: Combine the strength of metal with the aesthetic appeal of porcelain.
Post-Crown Care: After the crown is placed, it functions like a natural tooth. Good oral hygiene practices such as brushing, flossing, and regular dental check-ups are essential to ensure the longevity of your crown.
